When is it time for your child’s first visit to the eye doctor?

Father and his daughter are checking the eye vision in ophthalmology clinic. When you’re a parent, you’ve got a lot of things on your mind. Scheduling your child’s appointments with the pediatrician for checkups and vaccinations is probably one of them – but what about their eyes? When should you first take them for an eye exam? Read on for some more information about taking your child for an eye exam and the importance of doing this early!

When should you take your child to the eye doctor?

It might surprise you to find out the recommended age for a first eye exam – many eye care professionals say that your child should have his or her first exam by the age of 1. This exam isn’t just to check on how your child’s eyes are developing; it is also a chance to check for eye problems that can affect children throughout their lives. Some of these problems can be reversed if they are recognized and treated early enough.

An early exam is especially important if your family has a history of eye issues, such as crossed eyes or a lazy eye. Eye doctors who specialize in treating children have tests and equipment they can use to diagnose problems even if your child doesn’t know the alphabet and can even determine problems in children who haven’t learned how to talk yet!

As your child gets older, they should see their eye doctor about every 2 years if there don’t seem to be any problems. If they wear glasses or contacts, though, they should have an annual exam. Of course, there are some signs that you should schedule an appointment right away, such as if your child is having trouble reading or seeing to the front of the class in school. Many of your child’s eye problems can be corrected easily, such as with an eye patch or corrective lenses.
