When you’ve been wearing eyeglasses for years, it’s easy to take them for granted – you probably don’t take care of them like you did when you first got them. But it just takes one second to ruin your eyeglasses, which comes with the hassle and expense of having to replace them (not to mention not being able to see for the time it takes for them to be replaced). Read on for some tips for taking care of your eyeglasses!
Caring For Your Eyeglasses
You might be given special instructions for the care of your glasses, but here are some general rules:
• Never use paper products (such as a paper towel or toilet paper) or part of your shirt to clean your glasses. There may be something that is abrasive on these that scratches your lenses. And, don’t use products that aren’t specifically made to clean eyeglasses, because they can do more harm than good. Some glass cleaners, for example, contain ammonia, which can strip any coating off of eyeglasses. Use eyeglass cleaner, wipes, or water and a soft, microfiber cloth.
• If your lens has popped out or if a screw is loose or your glasses need some kind of adjustment, take them back to where you got them from for help. If you try to fix it yourself you may damage the frames.
• Pay attention to where you leave your glasses (so you can find them when you need them, for one thing!). You don’t want to leave them on the edge of a shelf where they can easily fall from and get stepped on, and you want to make sure children can’t reach them.
Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between problems with your glasses and changes in your vision. Visit your eye doctor once a year for an exam if you wear glasses or whenever you start to notice any problems.
