Andre J. Witkin, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialist and surgeon. Dr. Witkin graduated magna cum laude with a BA in biology from Dartmouth College. He completed an MD with honors in research from Weill Cornell Medical College, a 1-year fellowship in retinal imaging at the New England Eye Center, and an ophthalmology residency at Tufts Medical Center/New England Eye Center in Boston, MA. He then completed a 2-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
After fellowship, Dr. Witkin joined the Tufts Medical Center faculty, where he is now Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. He serves as the Co-Director of the Retina Service, the Co-Director of Clinical Research, and the Director of the Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship at the New England Eye Center of Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Witkin has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, as well as numerous other book chapters and articles, and is a co-lead editor of the book entitled “Age-related Macular Degeneration: Current Management.” His research interests include retinal imaging, treatment of exudative and non-exudative age-related macular degeneration, treatment of central serous chorioretinopathy, and toxicity and side effects of intraocular medications. He has been the primary investigator on numerous phase I, II, and III clinical trials and is the lead author on several papers that were among the first to report adverse reactions to several intraocular medications.
Dr. Witkin has received the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Honor Award from the American Society of Retinal Specialists. He is also a member of the Retina Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the New England Ophthalmological Society, and the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He serves as a member of the Research in Safety and Therapeutics Committee for the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Dr. Witkin’s interests include running, skiing, hiking, the New England Patriots, and spending time with his two daughters. He is fluent in French and conversant in Spanish.
